A Room Fit For A Teen And A Tween

Sharing a room is not an ideal situation for any kid, but when there isn’t another option, compromise is imperative.

My girls’ shared room was a challenge to design.  There is a 5-year age difference between them, so I was tasked with designing a space for a child and a teen.  Two different personalities with different interests, wants and needs.  I sat my girls down and asked each how they envisioned their ideal room.  Although they had different visions, they both choose one common design element: the color.

I wanted to create a pretty and fun feature wall in their room, so I decided to use wallpaper for that wall. I love wallpaper because it’s a great way to add texture, depth and artistry to a space.  Because my girls both agreed on light blue, I choose wallpaper with that accent color.  This wallpaper became my inspiration for the scheme of the room.

Keeping their styles in mind, I created a space with a touch of glam and a touch of shabby chic.

My teenager wanted a dedicated space where she could house and apply her makeup.  I created this glam area with a light-up mirror and mirrored desk.

Due to this glam area, we weren’t able to fit in a large dresser for each girl.  They have a large walk-in closet, so we hung up most of their clothing and got these smaller dressers.  Over the dressers I created a gallery wall.  The artwork and wall art are DIY’s.

I used wall mounted picture ledges to hold their books, while also incorporating books throughout the room for decorative details.
